Waingapu has an area of 73.8 km2 and is inhabited by 39,239 people spread across 7 sub-districts. Most of the residents of Waingapu City are Sumba and Sabu tribes. For visitors coming from outside the island, Waingapu City can be reached easily by air transportation.

Regarding tourism, Waingapu has extraordinary natural beauty. Wairinding Hill is a mainstay tourist attraction in Waingapu. Located in Pambotanjara Village, Wairinding Hill presents a panoramic view of a cluster of hills with a beautiful expanse of meadows like Teletubbies hills. Having the same characteristics as Wairinding Hill, about 1 hour 18 minutes drive to Kambera, there is Mauliru Hill whose beauty is not much different from Wairinding Hill.

Located about 1 hour 54 minutes from Waingapu City, there is a Praiyawang Traditional Village which still preserves East Sumba’s customs. Rows of traditional houses with tower-like roofs are also the main attraction of Praiyawang Village.
